Baron Wolman (1937-2020) was an American photographer and photojournalist known for his legendary contributions to Rolling Stone magazine as its first chief photographer.
Scope and Contents
The William Bennett Turner Clippings and Correspondence on Baron Wolman spans the years 1962-2011 and includes some undated material. Divided into three series, this collection includes press clippings, publications, and correspondence related to William Bennett Turner's lifelong friendship with photographer Baron Wolman. Wolman's work with Rolling Stone, where he served as the magazine's first chief photographer, is featured throughout the press clippings and magazines. Wolman's photography is prominent in Rags, his short-lived counterculture fashion magazine that was published from 1970-1971. Turner helped finance Rags, and their personal and professional relationship is expanded upon in the correspondence. The correspondence provides insight into Wolman's professional and personal life, as well as the popular culture of the time. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, including Miles Davis, Fats Domino, the Doors, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, Keith Richards, Ike and Tina Turner, and Frank Zappa are featured throughout the photography, publications, and recollections found in this collection.
