Biography / Administrative History
Fred W. McDarrah was born in Brooklyn in 1926. McDarrah served in World War II and studied journalism at New York University graduating in 1954. He began his photography career covering the Beat scene in New York capturing one of the first photographs of Bob Dylan. McDarrah joined the Village Voice in 1959 as a salesman, but quickly became the publication's first staff photographer and later photo editor covering the music, art, culture and politcs. In his role at the Village Voice, McDarrah documented the Village scene, capturing iconic images of artists, musicians, performers and activists and documenting political rallies, the gay and women's rights movement and anti-war marches. He published his photos in a number of books over the course of his career and continued to work for the Village Voice for 50 years, still serving as a consulting photo editor upon his death.

Series I: Fred W. McDarrah is dated 1957-1984, 1995 and includes undated materials. The series consists of black-and-white photographs taken by McDarrah throughout New York City. Artists featured include Joan, Baex, the Beatles, Beach Boys, David Bowie, Buffalo Springfield, Coasters, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Elton John, Sly and the Family Stone, Patti Smith, Tina Turner and Van Morrison. The series is arranged alphabetically by artist or band.
