Biography / Administrative History
The San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and 1970s was deeply influenced by events happening within and outside the city’s borders. From the uptick in casual drug use, to protests of the war in Vietnam, and a growing sociopolitical counter culture, San Francisco was becoming a home base for musical experimentation, leading into the prevalence of psychedelic rock in the area. Bands such as Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother & The Holding Company, and many less well-known musical groups arguably became the sound of San Francisco for the latter half of the 1960s and into the 1970s. All of the bands included in this collection, excluding Bruce Springsteen, sprung out of this era and movement of music in San Francisco. The inclusion of Bruce Springsteen in this collection is an outlier.
