Scope and Contents
The Bob Heil Collection is dated 1972 to 1976 and includes undated materials. The collection contains catalogs and flyers for Heil Sound, press kits for Humble Pie, West, Bruce and Laing, and the Who, and photographs of Lynyrd Skynyrd and ? and the Mysterians. Also included is a tour itinerary for the Who's 1973 tour for which Heil Sound designed the sound system. The collection is useful for researchers interested in the development of the modern rock sound system. The collection is arranged by format.
Biography / Administrative History
Bob Heil is an American sound and radio engineer who is best known for creating the template for modern rock sound systems. He founded Heil Sound in 1966, which designed touring sound systems for bands such as The Who. Heil also invented the Heil Talk Box in 1973, which was used by musicians such as Peter Frampton, Joe Walsh, and Richie Sambora.
