- Biographie / Histoire administrativeMotown Records is an American record label founded by Berry Gordy Jr. as Tamla Records on January 12, 1959 and was incorporated as Motown Records Corporation on April 14, 1960. As an African-American owned label Motown played a significant role in the racial integration of popular music. In the 1960s, the Motown label developed the Motown Sound, a style of soul music with pop influence that enabled black artists to break through into the white popular music market.
