Mark Goodman is a radio and television personality, as well as an actor and author. Goodman began his career in rock radio, and in 1981, he joined the new music channel MTV as one of its first five video jockeys, or VJs. The VJs, who included Goodman, Nina Blackwood, Alan Hunter, J. J. Jackson, and Martha Quinn, introduced music videos, interviewed artists, and hosted television specials. Goodman hosted "The Week in Rock," "120 Minutes," and "The Top 20 Video Countdown," as well as other events for the channel. He left MTV in 1987 and went on to an acting career while continuing to host television shows such as "Illinois Instant Riches" and "Illinois' Luckiest" in the 1990s. Goodman also continued his career in radio, working at stations in Los Angeles and Chicago in throughout the 1990s, as well as the internet radio station Soundbreak.com. Since 2004, he has hosted radio shows on Sirius Satellite Radio.

The Mark Goodman Collection spans the years 1981 to 2009 and includes some undated materials. The collection contains Goodman's script for the 1985 Live Aid broadcast, his research files for the "It's the 80's" cruise line event, miscellaneous hand-written and typed notes, and video recordings. The recordings include interviews by Goodman during his time as an MTV VJ, as well as demo reels, Live Aid footage, and other television episodes and appearances. Artists interviewed include Lindsey Buckingham, Crowded House, Depeche Mode, Peter Gabriel, Cyndi Lauper, Paul McCartney, David Lee Roth, Bruce Springsteen, John Taylor, and Pete Townshend. The collection is arranged by format, and it provides insight into 1980s popular music and culture as well as highlighting the early years of music television. While it should not be considered a comprehensive body of Goodman's work, the collection is a strong representation of his career.
