Series I: Artist and Subject Files covers a broad range of music history, from the pre-rock-and-roll styles of blues and gospel through contemporary acts of the 21st century. The files date from 1926-2009, and include undated items. While the items in this series are primarily ephemeral, some files include contracts, correspondence, press releases, and other promotional material. Many of the photographs originally found here were split off into Series II, but select files still contain photographic material. These files are labeled "mixed materials" and have a general note about their contents. Also note that the following files are described at item level: "Advertisements," "Concert advertisements or handbills," "Contracts for television programs," and "Press releases." The series is arranged alphabetically by name or subject.
